SUPREMACY OF SAMA VEDA

First let me give an account of available traditional important commentaries.

1) Ramanujacharya’s Bhashyam - वेदानाम् ऋग्यजुःसामाथर्वणां य उत्कृष्टः सामवेदः सोऽहम् इति ।

2) Swami Desikan’s Tatparyachandrika - वेदान्तदेशिकस्य तात्पर्यचन्द्रिकायाम् - गीतिर्हि सामशब्दार्थः; तस्य वेदेषु निर्धारणं कथं? इति शङ्काव्युदासाय "सामवेदोऽस्मि" इति निर्देश इति प्रदर्शयति "ऋग्यजुरिति । सामवेदस्योत्कर्षो गीतिप्रधानत्वसहस्रशाखत्वादिभिः; अन्येषां तु तदभावात्तावन्मात्रेणापकर्षः; न तु प्रामाण्यतारतम्यात्। "ऋक् च वा इदमग्रे साम चास्तां सैव नाम ऋगासीदमो नाम साम स वा ऋक्सामो वावदन्मिथुनं सम्भवाव प्रजात्या इति नेत्यब्रवीत् साम ज्यायान्वा अतो मम महिमा" ऋ.ऐ.ब्रा.३।२३ इति गीतिरूपस्य साम्नः प्राधान्याद्गीतात्मकस्य सामवेदस्य प्राधान्यम्। "ऋग्भ्यो जातं वैश्यं वर्णमाहुः यजुर्वेदं क्षत्रियस्याहुर्योर्नि सामवेदो ब्राह्मणानां प्रसूतिः" यजुःका (३।९।५०) इति च॥

3) नीलकण्ठव्याख्यायाम् - सामवेदो गानेन रमणीयत्वात् इति ॥

4) मधुसूदनीव्याख्यायाम् - चतुर्णां वेदानां मध्ये गानमाधुर्येण अतिरमणीयः सामवेदोऽस्मि इति ॥

5) गानात्मकमाधुर्यरसवत्वेन आधिक्यं तत्रेति भावः - अमृततरङ्गिणी पुरुषोत्तमः

6) सामवेदो गानेन रमणीयत्वात् नीलकण्ठभावदीपिका

All the other available five commentaries did not quote any reason for the phrase “I am Sama Veda among Vedas”.

In the above commentaries except No.2 other commentators gave the reason for the supremacy of Sama Veda is that Sama Veda is in the form of Song and beautiful to hear than the other Vedas. Hence, Shri Krishna said “I am Sama Veda among Vedas”

.

In Tatparyachandrika Swami Desikan gave the following reasons for the supremacy of Sama Veda than the other Vedas. They are :

    1)  It is in the form of Song and beautiful to hear

    2)  It has 1000 branches, the heist number of branches than the other Vedas

    3)  It is heard in Itareya Brahman that Sama Veda is supreme.

    4)  As Brahmin Varna is originated from Sama Veda, it is supreme.

However, here Desikan categorically states that the supremacy of Sama Veda is in no way reduces the authority of other Vedas and all Vedas are equally authoritative.

In addition to this my views are :

         1)      Sama Veda is related both to Yagas and people due to its musical aspect

       2)      Sama Veda is related both to habitats and forests as it has two varieties of Ganas via Grama Geya (to be sung in habitats) and Aranya Geya (to be sung in the forests)

         3)      Taittiriya Upanishad says that Brahman rests at ultimate bliss singing Sama Gana

       4)      It is heard in Chandogya “वागेव ऋक् प्राणः समः” (छांदोग्य- १-४) and also in Yajurveda (shukla) “ऋचं वाचं प्रपद्ये मनो यजुः प्रपद्ये साम प्राणं प्रपद्ये”  that Sama Veda is Prana.

       5)      It is heard in Shatapatha Brahmanam “सर्वेषां वा एष वेदानां रसो यत् साम" (श.प.ब्रा. १२.८.३.२३) that Sama is the essence of all Vedas
